This morning a video came across my video feed from a Youtuber I follow, not because I think he’s particularly that smart, but because he’s an Alien fanatic. He just doesn’t know that’s what he is.
In fact most people—whether they’re rooting for their favourite sportsball team or following around their favourite musical act or promoting what they see as the best cell phone, pushing their brand of politics or economics or their corporate or small business products or services, or rooting for their own country to “win” something— don’t usually understand what kind of behaviour they’re engaging in, if it’s not explicitly packaged and recognized as a “theology.”
This is unfortunately a failure of imagination, one that can come with serious complications and consequences.
In fact I could argue that “experts” are often themselves, a kind of secular fanatic. In order to become an “expert,” usually in the form of some kind of PhD to be accepted by mainstream expert organizations, you need to know more about a particular area of study than most other people do. If you didn’t, it’s not likely you would make it past local NPR style interviews whether in print, radio or television formats. In other words if you’re considered a real “expert,” you go on major networks like Fox, CNN or the BBC to be interviewed by hard hitting news anchors about current events.
This led to an atmosphere where there was a kind of comfort in the operation of these large, often corporate platforms where you pretty much knew what to expect, and if there were two experts with opposing views, they would each argue their position, and the audience would decide who won and who lost a debate.
Unfortunately, this also led to a phenomenon where the audience, largely led by the lowest common denominator, would lead the actions of the corporations, who were seeking numbers, not expertise. And not just the numbers of eyeballs, but also the numbers in terms of advertising dollars where the corporations, products and services with the deepest pockets and maximum returns on investments would lead the culture. And for a long time, that’s the way it was.
People like to make up fancy terms to describe things, but sometimes the truth is a lot more domestic. People with a more conspiratorial edge, something that can also come with expertise, like to try and make their observations sound unique and marketable whether or not they know that’s what they’re doing. And because people look to the experts, phrases like “the Overton window,” repeated by other “experts” who follow around the “top” experts, because as we already explained, the expert world is actually very pyramidical, but the truth is, it’s really not a phrase that was needed to make sense of the fact that if it bleeds it leads, and sex sells.
The one thing that seems to have increasingly been a driver of viewer retention is various forms of secular arguments, because they don’t, by the inherent selective pressure we’ve just been describing, offend various members of the audience. So if we follow the logic trail, secular thinking, due to largely unseen and unacknowledged forces, has been incredibly dumbed down to sell McDonalds Happy Meals and pills to undue the damage from eating too many Big Macs.
Just for the record I’m not picking on McDonalds, but it’s about as un-offensive a franchise as I can conjure up at the moment, and it’s obviously pure Americana.
If you get enough of these dumbed down, secular fanatics together in a large organization, that fanaticism can turn into an theology without a proper Holy book, but with plenty of hymns and coordinated actions that resemble a congregation.
And that brings us to two major trends in the world.
“Disclosure,” and AI. Both totally fanatical, both full of fanatical followers that pretend they’re just seeking a greater “truth.”
